Day 9, last day of our tour (20 March 2005)
Gent, Belgium
Church tower |
The town hall is a baroque masterpiece, with
hundreds of delicately carved statues representing the guilds and
history of the town. |
Detail of some of the statues on the town hall. |
Detail of the painting on the portico of the
theatre. Note also the lone statue at the very top. |
Ivy outside St Nicholas' Church. Photograph
by Charles, |
David trying (unsuccessfully) to control
Charles beside the War Memorial. |
This great bell was taken from the Cathedral
and is now mounted as a memorial in the main square. |
One of Charles' first attempts at
photography! He hasn't quite understood what `horizontal' means,
yet. |
Kortrijk
Buildings
Gatehouses at either end of the bridge over the
river Leie. |
The splendid carillon (stand-alone bell tower
with a musical ring of bells) in the main square. |
Unusual Romanesque style of building on one of
the guild houses. |
The 19th Century introduced a more classical
style of architecture. |
Church
The Church is a dominant feature of the town centre. It is
unusual in being of a very light coloured stone, which makes it stand out, and
in having a small ornate spire on top of the tower.
Playground
The two children relaxing for a while. |
Ivy beside the war memorial. |
Restaurant
A very tired traveller
