TWYCROSS ZOO

29 AUGUST 2005: David, Georgina and Charles spent the day at Twycross Zoo, about two hours' drive from Melbourn. It was a lovely day, and most enjoyable, though being a bank holiday it was unfortunately somewhat too crowded. But we managed to see quite a lot of the animals, including ....

Mummy Orang-Utan; Georgina Orang-Utan; and Charles Orang-Utan!

The little Orang-Utan infant was very new indeed, and enjoying exploring his new world.

Red Howler monkey having a little break from howling.

Siamangs are marvellously agile apes of the Gibbon family.

A Red Ruffed Lemur, one of the most attractive of the Madagascar primates.

Black & White Colobus Monkey.

***

Red-crested Turacos are native to Angola.

Blue-winged Kookaburras come from the North of Australia and New Gunea.

The Spot-billed Pelican ranges throughout South-east Asia.

Great Grey Owls live in the Northern forests of Europe and America.

***

Capybara - the world's largest rodent, from South America

Prairie dog - once widespread across North AMerica, now thanks to conversion of its prairie habitat to farmland becoming very rare.

Meerkats, fooled by the heat into thinking that they're back in Africa, lazily on the lookout.

Bat-eared Fox on the alert

A lion, about to lie down for an after-lunch snooze.

Giant tortoises can live to be well over 100 years old.

Charles was fascinated by the elephants!

... and astounded by the giraffes!

Not the best picture of a sea lion.

And we couldn't escape the playground afterwards ......

And finally, a few pictures of the enjoyment in progress. The last picture shows `someone' explaining to his father why he wants to be an Orang-Utan when he grows up ....
