My beloved parents.

Juanito Balasabas Lirasan. My dad was born on 12 June 1946, in Malabuyoc, Cebu. He had two brothers and one sister. He is the second child.  He was educated at Malabuyoc Central Elementary School and then to Perpetual Succour Academy. He wasn't able to go to University because his parents couldn't afford to send more than one of their children to college. He gave way to his younger brother (who unfortunately died suddenly in July 2004).

He left home and worked at a Construction Company for more than 25 years. He travelled to many different places in the Philippines, one of which was in Davao City where he met MUM.

After they got married they went back to Malabuyoc to settle down. Because he had a new family of his own, father decided to leave construction work and became a fisherman. But things went badly, and got worse (very sad and painful events which I can't share). He then went back to the Construction business as a contactor until just recently when he had a health problem.

Vina Jumao-as Inoc. Mother was born on 31 March 1944, in Sta Rosa Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines. She is the fourth of the six siblings in my grandfather's second marriage.

Though her family was quite well off, she wasn't able to finish her Elementary education (neither were her other two sisters) because of my grandmother's ridiculous belief that women should just look after their husband and children. She just managed to read and write and understand and speak basic English.

She decided to liberate herself and run away at the age of 14. She worked in various different establishments, from a house maid to a dressmaker, to a hair dresser and then to a make up artist.

Having six children to raise and her husband frequently being away, with very few resources, didn't discourage my mother from motivating us to go to school. Without her, we ourselves would be uneducated.

MY PARENTS GOT MARRIED ON 28 JUNE 1968. ALTHOUGH THE CEREMONY ITSELF WENT WELL, MY GRANDMOTHER DISAPPROVED OF MY FATHER. SHE CURSED MOTHER FOR DISOBEYING HER BY WEARING BLACK AT THE WEDDING - AN OMEN OF BAD LUCK. THE BAD LUCK CAME IN THE FORM OF THE HARD TIMES THROUGH WHICH MY PARENTS AND WE HAD TO STRUGGLE. BUT SO FAR, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, WE HAVE MANAGED TO CONQUER MOST OF THE ADVERSITY.
